This book provides a unified treatment of network systems and identifies, in a rigorous manner, how performance, vulnerabilities, and synergy can be quantified, and numerous network examples and applications have been incorporated throughout the book.. Beginning with Part I, the book explores the theoretical and practical foundations for a new network performance/efficiency measure that extends the Latora-Marchiori measure to incorporate such crucial network characteristics as decision-making induced flows and costs, in order to assess the importance of network components in a plethora of network systems. In addition, instead of quantifying and assessing the impact of the complete disruption/removal of a network component, Part II formalizes the concept of network robustness, another important aspect associated with network vulnerability. For example, network robustness is concerned with the reduction in network resources, such as link capacity. The third part of the book exploits the recently established connections between transportation networks and different network systems and demonstrates how the new network measure can be applied to different network systems, including financial networks as well as, in the dynamic context, to the Internet and even to supply chain networks in the case of random demands. The final part of the book, Part IV, turns to the exploration of synergy associated with network systems and focuses on supply chain networks in the case of mergers since many scholars debate whether or not mergers achieve their objectives.
