For two centuries wetlands have been drained indiscriminately to allow economic development - mainly for agricultural and crop production, but also for industrial, commercial, and residential uses. Today there is a new government focus on compensatory mitigation for wetland losses. A Case for Wetland Restoration illustrates the importance of wetlands and refutes the argument that wetlands can't be mitigated. Describing the reversal in federal public policy from the destruction to the restoration of wetlands, this text demonstrates how Section 404 of the Clean Water Act has worked in the interest of the environment.
