Since the publication of the first edition of The Evidence Base for Diabetes Care in August 2002, there have been several developments that warrant the publication of a second edition. New evidence continues to accumulate from clinical trials and from more detailed analysis of published trials. The general move towards acceptance and promotion of evidence-based medicine should mean that more people are encouraged to use material from this book as the basis for their regimens of care. The book comprises five Parts, addressing the major themes of definition and classification; primary and primordial prevention and early detection; prevention of complications; treatment of established complications; and effective management of diabetes. Commentaries discuss the key points and their broader context, enabling the reader to gain a coherent overview of each major area of investigation. As well as discussing available evidence from clinical trials, the chapters highlight areas where the evidence is lacking, discuss studies underway that might address this lack and suggest alternative approaches to deriving the required information. The book is an invaluable reference source for the practising clinician, providing a comprehensive yet clear account of the evidence base for diabetes management and treatment, the relevant strengths and weaknesses, and the research that needs to be done to ensure that people with diabetes receive the best possible care.
